Each year, in September, as invariably as leaves change colors and begin to fall from trees...
... Yearly assessment process starts up for resources I'm in charge of.
This period is always a time when I try to put things into perspective regarding my practice of management. Indeed, my self-assigned objective is to make people grow, as when people grow, you can grow with them, and not on top of them.
Make people grow is not an easy nor pleasant task. You've got to highlight what went well, which are the prominent areas of improvement with regards to the career path people aim at. Sometime, you even have to ruin people's dreams as you see obviously that their target career path does not match with their personality... You've got to get rid of subjective or biases which could occur to be as fair as possible in your assessment. However, to keep a positive mindset, I try to always keep in mind this quote from Benjamin Disraeli:
The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own.~ Benjamin Disraeli
This helps me communicate enthusiasm and to turn necessary criticism into a positive way.
Ready for the giant treasure hunt ?
If you don't already know him, Benjamin Disraeli (21 December 1804 – 19 April 1881) was a British Conservative politician, writer, aristocrat and dandy who twice served as Prime Minister. He was a very charismatic leader and during the race for Prime Minister position, Disraeli was opposed to William Gladstone. Jennie Jerome, Winston Churchill's mother, after sitting next to Gladstone, wrote,
I thought he [William Gladstone] was the cleverest man in England. But when I sat next to Disraeli I thought I was the cleverest woman.~ Jennie Jerome
With this kind of charisma, it's worth reading his quotes !
